My Lasik Story

The following post comes from our Account Manager, Laura Mills.

Every member of my family has terrible vision. My brothers and I each received our first pair of glasses in the 3rd grade. I soon transitioned to contact lenses when I reached the 6th grade and I wore them every day for the next 10 years. After giving birth to my first daughter, I resorted to wearing my glasses because it was easier to manage. It wasn't until a friend of mine spoke about her LASIK experience that I began to consider it for myself.

LASIK stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis and is a procedure performed by an ophthalmologist to reshape a cornea in order to improve visual acuity. My contact prescription was -5.75 in both eyes. Without corrective lenses I could not see any defined shapes more than a few inches from my face. I met with my ophthalmologist and I was approved for an iLasik procedure, which is performed by lasers rather than by blade. On September 11, 2012, I had iLasik corrective surgery and it was the best investment I've ever made!

One of the side effects of LASIK is the likelihood of dry eyes. I was given prescription drops immediately after surgery and purchased over the counter drops to use in the months following. In my personal experience, it seemed like my eyes were becoming reliant on the drops rather than producing their own tears. I wanted to eventually stop using drops and not be dependent on them for the rest of my life.

Less than 6 months after my surgery, I became pregnant with my second daughter. The hormones of my pregnancy impacted my eyes in two unexpected ways: my vision worsened but my dry eye improved! According to my doctors, pregnancy hormones are unpredictable and usually return to normal after giving birth. They were right: my vision returned to my new post-operative normal and my dry eye returned, but on a smaller scale.

3 years later, my second daughter is officially a three-nager and I take Focus Relief Plus for my dry eye. I no longer need drops! LASIK remains the best decision I've made for my eye health. It's amazing to be able to see my growing children right before my eyes!
