Alcohol and Eye Health

Let's raise a glass to eye health!

Alcohol in moderation is generally advised to maintain good eye and overall health. But over-consumption of alcohol can lead to a toxic, progressive optic neuropathy (optic atrophy) which can cause visual impairment and damage to the optic nerve cells. This damage leaves colours appearing washed in the affected eye, or in severe cases, even vision loss.

It is advised that men drink no more than 21 units of alcohol per week and no more than 4 units in one day. For women, the recommended alcohol intake is no more than 14 units per week and 3 units in one day.
